Sophomore Scholar Presents Research at Harvard Medical School

Posted By: The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program    Published: Monday, 10 Apr 2017

Sophomore MasterCard Scholar, William Yakah, was invited to present at the New England Science Symposium held at Harvard Medical School in Boston on March 25, 2017. The symposium gives students the opportunity to share their research and engage in discussions about various disciplines within the science field. Yakah, a neuroscience major, was surrounded by like-minded undergraduate peers, graduate students, and post docs. "It was really informative. I learned a lot from their presentations," he said. "It gave me the chance to meet people that I can look up to."

Yakah gave his presentation on research that relates to human nutrition within Africa. "My poster presentation was about omega-3 fatty acids and their association with executive function among two to six year old children in Ghana," he said.

This once in a lifetime experience was made possible through the help of his mentor, Jenifer Fenton, from the Food Science and Human Nutrition department at Michigan State University. Together, they've conducted research about omega-3 fatty acids and will continue to further explore the topic throughout Yakah's course of study at MSU.

William's research was selected from a pool of highly qualified candidates. He submitted his application in December 2016, and it wasn't until February 2017 that he received the official invitation to present.

Yakah took advantage of this special opportunity to share his findings. When asked if he'd recommend this experience to others, he replied, "Yes! You get to learn about what others are doing in your field and in other fields. It is one of the biggest highlights of my college career thus far."
