Tanzania Student Entrepreneur of the Year Visits MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program

Posted By: The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program    Published: Friday, 16 Sep 2016

Kicking off the fall semester, The MasterCard Foundation Scholars at Michigan State University were fortunate to be visited by Ms. Diana Mbogo, the Tanzania Student Entrepreneur of the Year.

Ms. Mbogo recently graduated with a bachelor's of science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam and, at just 23 years old, is founder of Millennium Engineers Ltd, an alternative energy company operating in Tanzania. Fueled by her view that "the backbone of sustainable development is clean energy", Mbogo solicited her own funding to expand the venture that was born from a class project during her third year of college.

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is a champion of entrepreneurs and a strong believer in the power of the entrepreneurial mindset. Through this lens, the MasterCard Foundation Scholars were grateful to receive firsthand advice from Mbogo.

"Find a mentor", someone who is knowledgeable and confident. "Show them your weak point and ask if they can support you." Mbogo stressed the importance of building a good team and seeking advice from others. "I found the best people to advise me and the best students – maybe not by grades but by passion. Set up a team – a team should support, challenge, and learn from each other and a team should be strong enough to pick each other up." She also cautioned the Scholars to exercise patience and recounted how she initially said no to a lot of investors because she did not yet know the value of her company. "Don't sell if you don't know your value yet. Don't be in a rush".

Above all else, the recurrent theme of Mbogo's presentation was confidence and how it was the pivotal ingredient to her success. "You can register a company name, but you cannot register confidence. Wear your confidence. Nothing pays like confidence".

Ms. Mbogo is the latest entrepreneur to visit the MasterCard Scholars. Read about entrepreneur Yves Iradukunda and his visit to Michigan State University: Entrepreneurial Ventures and Career Opportunities in Africa: Discussion with a Returned Scholar.
