2016 Walker Hill International Award

Nominations Solicitation


Award amount will depend on the income generated by the endowment but should be at least $600.


  • MSU doctoral student at pre-dissertation stage who has completed adequate credits to have pre-dissertation research objectives;
  • Description, appropriateness and feasibility of pre-dissertation research objectives to be accomplished during the period spent abroad;
  • Scholarly excellence;
  • Character and personal attributes that contribute to a high probability of success in an international setting;
  • Financial need may be considered;
  • Previous recipients of a Walker Hill award or an ISP Predissertation Travel Award are not eligible;

Permissible Uses of the Award:

To be utilized for pre-dissertation visits to the doctoral research site in a country outside the United States; International students may not apply to undertake research in the countries from which they hail

Application Procedure:

  • Completed Walker Hill Award Application Form;
  • Letter of application describing how scholarship funds would be utilized vis-à-vis student's program of study and how the research project will contribute to extant scholarship;
  • Letter of support from applicant's academic or research adviser (Reference letters are confidential and will only be shared with members of the Selection Committee);
    Note: Reference letters may be sent electronically with a signed and sealed hard copy to follow.
  • Letter of support from a second faculty member.
  • Official MSU transcript that includes fall 2015 grades. Transcripts from previously-attended educational institutions are not required;
  • Curriculum Vitae or Resume;
